Based on Waiheke Island, Carol Bucknell is a figurative painter, working mainly in oils and cold wax medium on panel. Her subjects are often depicted in contemplative poses on beaches or in gardens, and recently she began referencing old photos in her work.

"For me the figure reveals as much about a person as the face. Through the use of bold colour, texture, stencils and other media my aim is to take the figure beyond its traditional boundaries while retaining the essential elements of the human form."

In 2024 Carol took part in a joint exhibition at Waiheke Art Gallery. The following year she was a finalist in the Walker & Hall Art Award.

In January 2026, Carol was runner up in the Craigs Aspiring Art Prize, and in February 2026 she won runner up prize in the Adam Portraiture Award.
